Answer to a Frequently Asked Question

Complaints or Grievances

If you are a student who wishes to contest a grade that you received in an education course, we first ask that you contact the course instructor and discuss the matter with that person. If those discussions reach an impasse and you wish to move to the next level, you should notify Rod Stewart, the Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs.

If you are a student, staff member, or faculty member and you feel you have been treated unfairly or unprofessionally by a staff or faculty member from the School of Education, we first ask that you contact the person in question and attempt to resolve the matter personally. If those discussions reach an impasse and you wish to move to the next level, please fill out a complaint form (download and fill out by hand) and forward it to Carla Koontz, Director of Undergraduate Education. Off-campus students can send this form via campus mail through the SAU staff at their site or directly to Carla Koontz, 106 E Main St., MS 13, Spring Arbor, MI 49224. Please do this even if the issue at hand concerns graduate studies. We will not be able to formally act on any complaint unless it is written and signed using this form.

If you are a faculty member and you wish to file a grievance against the University, please follow the procedures outlined in the SAU Faculty Handbook.
