Application Materials for the Proof of professional liability insurance is now (as of 1/18/07) highly recommended for all student teachers. Two recommended and affordable agencies are the Student Michigan Education Association (800-292-1934) and Christian Educators Association International. It may also be possible to add professional liability insurance to your homeowner’s insurance policy. For students who opt to join the Student Michigan Education Association to get insurance, the SMEA recommends waiting until August 1 of the current year to send in the application (by then, the new form may be available on their website). Also, write on the form that this membership and liability insurance is requested for the school year during which you will be student teaching, so it will be very clear to the SMEA what you are seeking. It will take approximately 2 weeks for the SMEA paperwork to be processed, giving time for this to be in place prior to the start of student teaching. Students will be required to self-report information regarding
their professional liability insurance coverage prior to student teaching
approval and will not be allowed to begin student teaching until such
is provided. A
form for self-reporting professional liability insurance information
is now a part of the student teaching application. Students are expected
to keep the liability insurance coverage active through the last day of
their student teaching.
