Answer to a Frequently Asked Question

Graduate Teacher Education
Technology Proficiency Requirement

In order to take the required classes Edu 537 and Edu 560,, all students (unless specifically advised) must satisfy a course prerequisite of basic computer proficiency.

Students may submit any one of the following as proof of basic computer proficiency:

  • Certificate, transcript, or letter conveying successful completion of a curriculum package that has the seal of alignment with NETS-T (National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers) by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) in one of the endorsed curricula (a partial list includes Microsoft Office Specialist XP Track, Intel Teach to the Future, IC³, and MarcoPolo)
  • Certificate, transcript, or letter conveying successful completion of a curriculum package developed or undertaken by a school building, district, ISD/RESA, other Michigan-based K-12 agency (such as MACUL), or a graduate class at another institution with a 500 level or above
  • Michigan Certificate of Outstanding Achievement in Teaching with Technology, earned as a student teacher or as a practicing teacher
  • a Spring Arbor University transcript showing completion of SAU's Edu 260 or Edu 360 during their undergraduate teacher preparation with a grade of C+ or better; this option does not extend to undergraduate classes taken at other institutions
  • successfully passing the Teacher Education Computer Proficiency Exam for undergraduate students; this option is meant to be a "last resort" for prospective students who cannot show proof any other way
