Answer to a Frequently Asked Question

Undergraduate and Graduate
Teacher Education
Computer Proficiency Exam

The proficiency exam will consist of five sections: Basic Concepts, Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Presentation, and Web Pages. The Microsoft Office Suite will be the software of choice for word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation files. Macromedia Dreamweaver, Netscape Composer, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, or a text editor may be used to create web pages. The entire exam will be administered through Blackboard. Each section is worth 20 points. In order to pass the exam, students must have an overall passing score of 75 points or 75%, plus a minimum score of 12 points or 60%, on any one section. Below are examples of passing and failing scores.

Students are notifed of the results via email, generally within about a week of the date the exam is administered.

Undergraduate students who fail the exam will be asked to enroll in CPS 150 to satisfy the computer proficiency requirement. Undergraduate students may be offered the chance to retake one section of the exam under very select circumstances.

Graduate students who fail the exam must notify graduate program staff which courses or workshops they will undertake to shore up their knowledge. Once the plan is approved and carried out with documentation of completion provided, the computer proficiency requirement will be satisfied. Graduate students cannot retake the exam.

The exam will be offered at least four times per academic year on the main campus and once at each site. The cost to the student will be $50 per test attempt. The money will be used to cover costs of development and administration of the exam, as well as to purchase and maintain site-licensed software that education students will use in their courses. This will be software considered unique to applications in P-12 education.

Students should consider the following questions to help determine whether they are ready to take the exam. Remember, this exam is meant to facilitate academic progress for undergraduate students who are "good" at using technology. If you see yourself as "average" or "below average" you are advised to enroll in CPS 150.
