ResNet Rules of the Road |
| |
As a community that affirms the leadership of Jesus Christ in a technological world, Spring Arbor University requires responsible use of technology resources by students, faculty, and staff. As such, the University's behavioral guides also apply in the use of computing, video, and other technologies. Respect for personal dignity, privacy, and copyright is of utmost importance.
ResNet Acceptable Use Policy
The use of the University owned network is a privilege, not a right. It is the responsibility of the student to use this service appropriately and in compliance with all SAU, City, County, State, and Federal laws and regulations.
This policy describes the acceptable use of ResNet at Spring Arbor University . By connecting to ResNet you agree to abide by SAU's Acceptable Use Policy so please read this document carefully.
- You and you alone are responsible for the use of your computer and network connections. You will be held accountable for any violation that occurs in connection with its use. If you allow someone else to use your computer, you are still responsible.
- Spring Arbor University is committed to upholding U.S. copyright law. It is a copyright violation to use peer-to-peer file-sharing software such as KaZaa, Direct Connect, Morpheus, BearShare, iMesh, Amister, AudioGalaxy, etc. to download copyrighted music or films from the Internet without the copyright owner's permission. The unauthorized reproduction and use of copyright images and text is also a violation of U.S. copyright law. If you are under the impression that your activity on the Internet is anonymous or untraceable be advised that your activity is logged on many of the computer systems you use and can be used to confirm or implicate you in illegal activity.
- You must register your computer and configure it according to the installation instructions found on the Spring Arbor University campus website.
- We take your privacy seriously, however, when you use the University's network there is no guarantee of privacy. In case of a legal proceeding we reserve the right to view electronic data and share the information with a legitimate third party.
- It is your responsibility to keep current on all software updates and patches provided by the maker of your operating system. Not keeping your operating system current puts not only your data at risk but leaves your computer open to hackers who can gain control of your computer and violate SAU policy and City, County, State, or Federal laws. If this happens you will be held accountable.
- Because of the difficulty of supporting a variety of anti-virus software programs, every computer connected to SAU's network must install and run a ResNet approved anti-virus software program. The approved anti-virus program will be supplied free-of-charge to every computer registering for ResNet. It is up to you to keep the virus definitions up-to-date. If a virus is detected on your computer, your service may be disconnected without warning and you may need to pay a fee to have your ResNet connection restored.
- The only software ResNet supports is what it provides you.
- ResNet is not responsible for any hardware problems you have with your computer.
- You are responsible for backing up your data files.
- Your password should not be disclosed or shared with anyone else. It should also be changed periodically and be something not easily guessed.
- You may not modify, alter, or tamper with SAU wiring, Ethernet ports, hubs, or other ResNet hardware.
- You may not use your ResNet connection for money making activities. This includes web pages that generate an income.
- ResNet is a shared resource. If you run applications that use excessive bandwidth for extended periods of time you impact the ability of others to access and use the network. If you use an excessive amount of bandwidth you may have your service disconnect without warning and may need to pay a fee to have your ResNet connection restored.
- ResNet does not guarantee that any gaming system or game designed for one of these systems will work through our network firewall. Furthermore, there is no guarantee of adequate bandwidth to support these games.
- Using an IP address not register to you is prohibited and may be cause for your service to be disconnected.
- You may not use your ResNet connection to interfere with the normal operation of the DHCP server.
- You may not use your ResNet connection to harass, annoy, or offend other network users.
- You may not use your ResNet connection for forgery or misrepresentation of your identity. Doing so could result in prosecution under State and Federal laws.
- Any user who attempts or succeeds in going around or defeating the network firewall will have their service terminated and
face possible disciplinary action.
The Acceptable Use Policy is here to protect the quality of your Internet and network connections. Violations of this policy will be handled as follows:
- First violations receive a warning. You will receive a phone call or an email. You are required to answer the warning within three business days, failure to do so could result in your ResNet service being disconnected.
- Second violations will have their ResNet service terminated. You will receive a phone call stating why your service has been terminated. Your case will be reviewed by the Users Service Manger who will determine whether your connection will be restored.
- Third violations will have their ResNet service terminated permanently.
We reserve the right to confront and address other behaviors that are compounding in nature and/or viewed as dangerous, destructive, unbiblical, or inconsistent with the Spring Arbor University mission. |
